Aloe vera has been used in skincare for generations because of its cooling, soothing, and refreshing feel on the skin. In this behind-the-scenes soap-making video, I’m showing how I take fresh aloe vera leaves, remove the gel, dry the remaining leaves, and grind them into a natural aloe leaf powder for handmade soap.

At Basically Soap, I love showing the process behind the product — from the ingredients to the finished bar. This aloe vera soap was made with creativity, care, and a science-backed approach to handmade skincare.

For this batch, I started with fresh aloe vera leaves. I cut the leaves open, removed the clear gel, and saved it for the soap-making process. Then I dried the remaining aloe leaves and ground them into a fine powder.

The process included:

  1. Cutting open the fresh aloe leaves
  2. Removing the aloe gel
  3. Drying the remaining aloe leaves
  4. Grinding the dried leaves into powder
  5. Using the aloe powder in handmade soap

This process gives the soap a deeper ingredient story and allows me to use more of the plant in a thoughtful way.

Why Aloe Vera Is Popular in Skincare

Aloe vera is well known for its cooling and refreshing feel on the skin. It is commonly used in cosmetic products such as soothing gels, lotions, after-sun products, and handmade skincare.

In soap making, aloe vera is often used because customers recognize it as a gentle, plant-based ingredient. For this soap, I used aloe as part of the creative formulation process while also highlighting the beauty of working with ingredients from their natural form.
